It’s Unreal How Teen Actor Zaira Wasim Is Smarter Than Most Stars Working Today
Zaira Wasim, the breakout star from Dangal is now returning to the public domain through her next film, Secret Superstar. Each film she has been in has been a testimony of her talent. Aamir Khan, in one of her interviews, referred to her as one of the most natural actor he knows of.
Coming from Aamir Khan, that’s a huge compliment.
I, much like everyone else, perceived Zaira Wasim as a great actor so far. However, her interviews reflect a side of her personality, the masses weren’t aware of.
And honestly, this new side is worth talking about.
How often do we see an actor that’s logical, humble and yet skilled.
I loved Zaira’s performance in Dangal. She perfectly adapted the ‘strict- father’s- scared -daughter’s’ role and as her role as Geeta progressed, I could actually see that she grew too. Not just physically. She adopted Geeta so well, that I felt it’s real life Geeta who is in the film.
During the casting of Dangal, the director was looking for the girl who would be the young Geeta Phogat. They had searched around quite a few of the girls. Zaira auditioned for the role of young Geeta Phogat in ‘Dangal’ with 19,000 other girls.
But then, I saw her interviews and I was stunned. She said, “I was very sad about how it was misunderstood it. I don’t regret writing the letter. I have always received ample love from Kashmir and if you do something that hurts, then as a person, I have the right to apologize.
The media or the people cannot stop me from feeling things. I will feel the way I want to and the whole thing was misrepresented. “
I mean a 16-year-old saying this is a big thing. How mature were we in our 10th grade? Over here, she not only understood the situation but reacted like a mature and sensible adult person would! She understood the sentiments of her fans and while she thanked them, she also asserted her right and freedom to be just the way she wants to!
The one thing that all our relatives asked us during our 10th grade, was what do you want to in your life or what are your plans. But we still don’t know about it, do we? Do we know what are we doing in our life? Perhaps, not.
So when asked what does she wants to do in future, her answer was, “I don’t know. I haven’t thought so much about it. I am still a teenager and this isn’t the right time for me to commit to anything. I still have loads of exploring to do and I still have to discover so much for myself.”
She is wise for her age. In the interview with Rajeev Masand, she said, “No matter how much you plan your life, destiny will shatter your plans. I am waiting for the destiny to show me the way.”
A teenager who has this level of clarity is something really rare found in the film industry. In this industry, where we find people either very expressive of their opinion or try to be very diplomatic, Zaira stands in a space where she gives opinions when it’s needed. She herself, thought that people should realise the difference between ‘want’ and ‘need’ because everyone has opinions. These are the words of a 16-year-old teenager! She is really wise for her age.
Starring Dangal girl Zaira Wasim, ‘Secret Superstar’ is a coming-of-age story about a Baroda based young girl Insiya who aspires to be a singer. Catch up with the trailer of Secret Superstar –
