Filmmaker Lekh Tandon Who ‘Discovered’ Shah Rukh Khan Passes Away

Yesteryear filmmaker, Lekh Tandon, majorly known for directing movies like Professor (1962) and Agar Tum Na Hote (1983) died at 88 years of age, last evening. Lekh Tandon was bed-ridden for the last five to six months and died at 5.38 pm on Sunday.

Lekh Tandon has directed many actors such as Shammi Kapoor (Professor, Prince), Rajender Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Rekha, Rajesh Khanna and others. His show Farmaan starring Kanwaljit Singh and Navin Nischol was a major hit amongst the masses. Amrapali (1966), directed under his command, featuring Sunil Dutt and Vyjayanthimala, was selected as Indian entry for the best foreign language film at 39th Academy awards.

Film actor Rishi Kapoor paid his condolences and tweeted,

Besides directing such beautiful films, he was also seen acting in Bollywood films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades, Paheli and Chennai Express and Aamir Khan’s Rang De Basanti.

He has also directed the TV show Dil Dariya in 1988, that featured Shah Rukh Khan, that was his first acting role in TV series which was delayed due to production issues making Fauji as SRK’s official debut serial.

His funeral was held today afternoon in Powai. Bollywood will always be indebted to Lekh Tandon’s ahead of the time creations and masterpieces.
