Small Beginnings to Huge Successes – 4 Sleeper Hits of Bollywood
We live in a time when big-budget commercial cinema is what most actors and directors run after. It hardly takes any efforts for a masala movie with a popular star cast to become a huge box office success. This makes it all the more difficult for new entrants, may it be directors or actors, to make an impact despite a unique story and an awe-inspiring performance.
Even in this huge clutter, a few directors from the industry have proved that a strong storyline, a decent budget, and excellent character portrayal, can take a movie to great heights. Here are a few Bollywood movies, with solely the performances and story as the backbone, went on to become sleeper hits.
A revenge thriller film in its true sense. From what looked like just another revenge story, to quickly escalating as one of the most violent Bollywood movies, NH10 keeps you at the edge of your seat, throughout. Anushka Sharma‘s girl-next-door image-breaker performance could not have been portrayed any better. Director Navdeep Singh‘s tight direction and Anushka’s gripping performance, was what brought out the true potential of the movie, making it a sleeper hit.
The movie takes a dig at our obsession for slim women. While we were still not totally over Kareena Kapoor’s size zero mantra, director Sharat Katariya brings to us the struggles of an overweight woman disliked by her husband. Kudos to debutante Bhumi Pednekar, who plays the overweight housewife of an unsupportive husband, but eventually succeeds in making her marriage work. A story about prejudices that almost every other Indian bride can relate to, probably contributed to the success of the film. Made on a low budget, the movie was well-received and went on to become a box-office hit.
A movie that did well despite not having stars in it, but actors who performed not less than any star. This adult comedy film stood out among others in the genre, getting us to follow the lustful life of a young sex addict. Director Harshavardhan Kulkarni can be credited for the exemplary performances of Gulshan Devaiah, Radhika Apte and Sai Tamhankar, who became more than just recognized faces in Bollywood. Comedy just when it’s needed and a fresh concept got audiences’ acceptance, especially the youth, making it a blockbuster.
With a cast consisting of relatively new faces like Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal, and Manjot Singh, their comic timings and the twisty story got the movie what it deserved. The quest of four youngsters to make easy money gets them into trouble, stuck between a local gangster and the police. The movie collected approximately 360 million INR by the end of its theatrical run, making it a success.
Our Sleeper Hit list will not be complete without –
The cult classic Sholay.
What’s not to like in the movie? Iconic dialogues, the portrayal of friendship and love, refreshing comedy, and unforgettable characters. You name it, and Sholay has it all, and more!
Samba! Kaalia! Gabbar! The only movie I can think of where the character names are remembered more than the actor names. Veeru’s – “Basanti in kutto ke samne mat nachna“, Basanti’s – “Chal Dhanno ..“, Gabbar’s – “Ye Haath Humko De De Thakur”, and Jai’s “Tumhara naam kya hai Basanti?” are etched in our memories forever.
Even after all this, would you believe if I say that the movie struggled to draw the audiences in the initial days and was also not favored by critics? The word-of-mouth publicity eventually made the movie an indisputable classic that it is today.
