From Aishwarya To Diana, Analyzing The Careers Of Previous Beauty Queens Turned Actresses

Manushi Chillar was crowned Miss World 2017, in a proud moment for India. A long, and potentially glittering career in the show business awaits her. But she needs to tread very, very carefully, especially if she has Bollywood dreams. Not every beauty queen had an illustrious career. For every Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, there is a Tanushree Dutta.

Let’s have a look at how the careers of previous beauty pageant winners turned out. (Please note- there were a few more beauty queens who made their way into films, but we are focusing on those who came into movies post 90s. So, Zeenat Aman, Juhi Chawla won’t feature in this list. Also, we’ll focus on the top 10, so Niharika Singh and Sayali Bhagat also miss the cut.)

#10 Diana Hayden

After becoming the Miss World in 1997, Diana did not directly come into movies; instead continuing her modelling career. She played a bit part role in Tehzeeb and starred in the Indian remake of Enough!, titled Ab Bas, but that was the end of her acting career.

#9 Celina Jaitley

After winning the Miss India pageant in 2001, Celina Jaitley went on to star in forgettable films like Janasheen and Khel. She lingered on for a few more years before finally quitting films for good.

#8 Tanushree Dutta

Miss India Universe 2004, Tanushree Dutta made a splash with Aashiq Banaya Aapne. Even though the film failed, Tanushree grabbed eyeballs for her glam quotient. However, that glam was not coupled with acting abilities, and she soon faded away, after a string of flops.

#7 Gul Panag

Miss India 1999 Gul Panag had a lacklustre run in Bollywood, but she did grab eyeballs with a great performance in Dor. Her stardom was short-lived, however.

#6 Neha Dhupia

She actually got lead roles for quite some time in the 00’s, but none of her movies really worked at the box-office. She soon settled into supporting roles, which she continues to do even today.

#5 Dia Mirza

Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein was the highlight of her film career, which could never reach the heights it once promised. Still, she managed a few good films, before fading away. She’s now a film producer.

#4 Lara Dutta

Lara Dutta was crowned the Miss World in 2000. Even though her film career took some time to take off, she did go on to star in A-list projects. Even her acting skills, which initially got her a lot of flak, improved considerably towards the end of her career.

#3 Sushmita Sen

Source

Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen went on to have a decent career in Bollywood, with her notable films being Main Hoon Na, Biwi No 1, and Chingari. She had the looks, and the class.

#2 Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

India’s international face Aishwarya Rai became the Miss World in 1994, and went on to have a great career in Bollywood, with blockbusters like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Josh, Taal, Devdas, and Dhoom 2. She recently made a successful comeback. She is one of the rare Bollywood actors who made a name abroad.

#1 Priyanka Chopra

Source

By far the biggest success story of Miss India, Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra did everything befitting a star. From Bollywood to Hollywood, to even becoming a popstar, PeeCee has done it all.

Let’s hope Manushi Chillar’s career goes more like Priyanka Chopra than Diana Hayden!
