14 Bollywood Movies That Created A Blast At The Box Office During Diwali in 90’s and 00’s

Diwali is a special time for everyone. The newest tradition during this festive season is catching a Diwali release in a theatre near you. We are now used to expecting something spectacular every Diwali since these films have a way of becoming superhits. We have compiled a list of top hit movies since 1992.

#1. Jigar (1992)

This movie starred Karisma Kapoor and Ajay Devgn as the leads. The only competition this movie had was Yaalgar starring Sanjay Dutt that didn’t perform so well.

#2. Baazigar (1993)

One of Shah Rukh Khan‘s earlier super hits, it is no wonder the Badshah of Bollywood is partial towards Diwali releases for his movies.

#3. Suhaag (1994)

Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar‘s chemistry hit it off. Andaaz Apna Apna, which released around the same time, didn’t really work at that time.

#4. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

It has been running for over 20 years now, but it comes as a surprise to some (including us) that it was a Diwali release.

#5. Raja Hindustani and Ghatak (1996)

Diwali blessings were showered in abundance during 1996, which had not one but two hit movies. Who wouldn’t want to watch these films again?

#6. Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)

Shiamak Davar made a big name for himself with this movie and love triangles became a huge thing in Bollywood.

#7. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)

As mentioned earlier, love triangles were everywhere and so were the double roles.

#8. Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999)

This movie had so much Sanskaar that every 90’s kid follows the ideals of this movie.

#9. Mohabattein (2000)

This movie launched a lot of careers but sadly not all were able to land on their feet. At least the movie did really well at the box office.

#10. Veer Zara (2004)

After a gap of four years, Diwali once again became a time when hits were delivered and who else but SRK could have done that?

#11. Garam Masala (2005)

This comedy of errors brought Bollywood’s new comic duo, Akshay Kumar, and John Abraham, together. Sadly, their second partnership (Desi Boyz) didn’t work out so well.

#12. Don – The Chase Begins Again (2006)

Shah Rukh Khan returned as the Don and although his role was met with some criticism, the movie managed to be a hit at the box office.

#13. Om Shanti Om (2007)

As we said earlier, SRK has a strange bond with Diwali. This film also launched Deepika Padukone in Bollywood.

#14. Golmaal Returns (2008)

The first Golmaal wasn’t a Diwali release but the ones that followed were. And as you can see, that really worked out well for Rohit Shetty.

Which among these is your favorite? Tell us in the comments below and don’t forget to share.
