Imtiaz Ali’s Heroines – His Muse, His Inspiration

He is known to have redefined modern, urban romances, giving cine-goers new perspectives about relationships in the era of the millennials. Imtiaz Ali, tells his story, almost always, via a female protagonist. It’s the women, who are in a true sense the driving force of his films, they are the muse, the inspiration. Be it Aditi of Socha Na Tha or Tara of Tamasha, the heroines of his films, break barriers and sort the heroes’ messy lives. These women are vulnerable, yet strong and opinionated. And most importantly, Imtiaz Ali’s actresses have absolutely no layers of shyness or hypocrisy. They have a freshly modern outlook towards life, with an undertone of emotional quotient and innocence, which gives their characters a beautiful depth. So here’s a list of his ‘female heroes’, who ended up saving “the lads in distress.”

Watching this film makes my heart jump with joy. The cute romance, the subtlety of falling in love and then the dilemma-everything in this movie is done right. But did you realize, that it’s Aditi who shows Viren, an otherwise irresponsible man, a direction in life? She brings the families closer and gets them both out of destructive and insane family situations.

Arguably Imtiaz Ali’s most famous work till date, Jab We Met is about how one accidental meeting, leads to the heartbroken Aditya falling in love with the bubbly Punjabi girl Geet, who is planning to run away with her boyfriend. Geet, a chatterbox, single-handedly turns Aditya’s directionless life around, making him fall in with life once again. He even names a business venture after her.

Deepika Padukone in Love Aaj Kal and Tamasha

In both the portrayals, she decides to take her life in her hands. Whether it’s Meera’s dedication towards her goals in Love Aaj Kal or her passion towards her love in Tamasha, it’s these characters who turn the male protagonist’s life 360 degrees. In Tamasha, when Ved, finally finds his passion, which is to be a director, he turns to Tara in awe for bringing out the best in him.
